These refillable marble candles double as an interior design statement

In our increasingly sustainable world, I am always on the lookout for things, namely those at the intersection of form that evokes joy and everyday function, that are worth saving, not just for one season, but for years to come. Better yet, a lifetime. This is how I found myself instantly and obsessively drawn to the burgeoning luxury house brand 1986, which offers handcrafted, heady scent marble candles that are both timeless design pieces and outstanding. Did I mention they are rechargeable?

Zahra Ayub, the Los Angeles-based designer behind the collection, was inspired to create 1986 after reading Illuminated prayer, a book on Sufism. “I came across this quote from Rumi that I really liked: ‘Let yourself be silently attracted by the strange attraction of what you really love’, so I decided to pay attention to the things that attracted me. », She explains. “I started to notice that most of my time was spent doing the house, decorating and collecting candles. Combining both her passion for design – Ayub studied fashion in her native London and is the former public relations manager of British fashion house Vivienne Westwood – and local craftsmanship from her home country. family, Pakistan (a major producer and exporter of high quality marble), she is committed to “connecting all the little pieces of my life journey and creating something unique,” she said Vogue.

In the end, Ayub felt a consciously designed, rechargeable call piece of art marble molds for scented candles, a category that could certainly be more environmentally friendly, from wax formulations to proper disposal and recycling. It was exciting both from a design and durability standpoint. “I wanted to design a multifunctional candle that could be collected and stored forever and that does not create waste,” says Ayub. “I also wanted to use organic coconut wax and provide a clean, safe burn, which was not common in the market. I knew this because I was a candle lover.
