Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Guwahati recently conducted extensive scientific research that offers strategic design management in the Eri and Muga silk sector in Assam. The report is among the first in this sector. The final report has already been accepted by the World Bank consultants.

Entitled ” Diagnostic Study on Weaver’s Needs Regarding Eri and Muga Silk ”, the research result will help to play an important role in the formulation of the development strategy in this sector. This study was conducted by Professor Amarendra Kumar Das, Department of Design, IIT Guwahati, and Dr Pratul Ch. Kalita, Associate Professor, Department of Design, IIT Guwahati. With the strategic contribution of the Design Department, IIT Guwahati, this project targets the socio-economic development of Assam.

Speaking of the landmark study, Dr Pratul Ch. Kalita said: “This is a very detailed study on Eri and Muga silk under the umbrella of the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project. (APART) funded by the World Bank. The project mainly focuses on studying the existing design value chain of Eri and Muga. Silk in Assam, from weaving (supply side – value creation) to marketing (demand side – value delivery), and formulation of the design management strategy to align demand and supply.

IIT Guwahati Study Strategic Design Management Interventions in the Eri and Muga Silk Sector in Assam: Five Design Management Strategies

For the demand and supply alignment of the Eri and Murga silk design value chain, Dr Pratul Ch. Kalita, identified five design management strategies:

  1. Development of a skills and competency graduation strategy.
  2. Attract weavers for Eri-Muga weaving.
  3. Frame Loom and a new semi-automatic loom to improve productivity and quality.
  4. Digital design bank and design studio.
  5. Have a system design solution for integrated supply chain management.

Likewise, Prof. Amarendra Kumar Das mentioned that the newly designed study will significantly improve the productivity and quality of weaving. The survey for the study was conducted by collecting primary data through structured questionnaires. Recruiters for the study included weavers, salespeople, cluster-level designers, dyers, and design suppliers.

Through extensive and detailed research, the study determined the skill level of weavers on various types of looms, machines and equipment. The researchers used a detailed methodological approach to prepare the report. Likewise, an in-depth structural method was used for the study in eight districts – Jorhat, Kamrup, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Charaideu and Biswanath.

The IIT Guwahati study proposes strategic design management interventions in the silk sector of Eri and Muga in Assam has already been accepted by Assam Rural Infrastructure and Agricultural Society, Government of Assam. The government has shown keen interest in implementing the proposals that have been made by the project.
