TAFE’s Design Course Offers More Than Just a Certificate

When Carina Brezeanu enrolled in the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) course at the TAFE NSW Design Center in Enmore, it was simply to satisfy her interests. Today, the owner of Arete Interiors has taken her interests to another level, in a career that continues to grow stronger.

The designer says she jumped between professional positions before settling where her passion is.

“This is my second career change. I studied psychology a long time ago and worked in learning and development and human resources for a few years. However, I didn’t like corporate life, so I started my own business organizing events and editorial styling which I ran for over 10 years, ”she says.

“Interior design was a natural progression from there and I sold my styling business to study the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) at TAFE NSW Design Center Enmore.”

The Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) course Brezeanu talks about takes place over three years. Students study in a studio learning environment, working in small groups to simulate interior design practice. An intensive and demanding course that guarantees industry-recognized certification and strong connections, those looking to dive into the design pool are encouraged to visit the Design Center.

Senior Interior Design Professor Todd Packer says the course develops practical design skills combined with theory to give students a good understanding of design best practices both in Australia and abroad.

“TAFE NSW Design Center Enmore is a purpose-built design studio where students can immerse themselves in design,” he says.

“Our teachers’ knowledge and industry contacts are second to none. We are always on the lookout for opportunities to give our students hands-on experience in the field so that they come out of the course ready for use.

Packer says Brezeanu – who won a scholarship in 2018 that saw her visit Italy – is the perfect example for aspiring designers that it’s never too late to start.

“Carina has tackled many new concepts and skills and has done exceptionally well in her classes, consistently achieving high marks in the creative and technical aspects of design,” said Todd.

“Her expertise and professional qualities were recognized when Carina received the ASOPHIA Student Design Award in 2019 and her teachers also nominated her for the Design Institute of Australia (GOTYA) Graduate of the Year Award, which will be announced in October 2021.

Born from a passion for simplicity and the pursuit of design excellence, Arete Interiors by Brezeanu offers a wide range of residential, commercial and style solutions for any job. Recommended by her professors for a position at the Scott Carver Design House, the designer has a skill set – honed at TAFE – that will enable her to have an illustrious career in the design industry.

TAFE NSW is now accepting applications for its July 2021 admission to the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) course. For more information, visit www.tafensw.edu.au or call 131 601.
