What’s the most talked about car launch this year? The XUV700 would probably be your answer. The hype was unreal, as was the long wait and the weight of expectations. Did Mahindra deliver? First impressions suggested this after our drive to Chennai. But this was the first diesel drive and for a few hours. Now after a few months, with the hype still there, how do you live with the XUV700? How is the SUV used on a daily basis, while traveling or just everyday? Does the XUV700 deliver? Let’s find out.
The XUV700 was delivered to us in âelectric blueâ and in this color it stands out. The attention it has garnered on our roads suggests that this isn’t the color to buy if you don’t like to be bothered by questions about the car everywhere you go. The XUV700 looks attractive and after months the basic design hasn’t faded from the previous shock of seeing one after years of waiting. I love that Mahindra didn’t stylize it too much and was restrained, which the previous XUV500 can’t tell. There are fewer unnecessary lines and the design is simple but has a presence. It’s huge, the XUV700 and has a nice high position. The front has a glossy black grille with little chrome while the new logo fits perfectly into this scheme of things.
The massive C-shaped headlights along with the DRLs are perhaps the most aggressive part of the design. It’s also neat and simple on the side with clean lines while the flush door handles are a neat tip, from a design standpoint. The 18-inch wheels on our test car, which is the gasoline-powered AXL, looked great while the large taillights again fit well into the overall design. The tailgate is thermoplastic, but as you may know it’s actually more expensive than standard sheet metal – reasons to use it where more sculpted lines can be done in terms of design and weight savings. .
The key is the standard Mahindra case and as you walk in the flush door handles pop out. These are neat design tips and make the overall design pretty smooth. It is also offered on more expensive SUVs. However, the top-of-the-line variant we had had electric versions and the rest had manual opening versions. It’s not as simple as the standard versions but something different that will appeal to owners.
Then you step up and the seat slides back for easier entry, a feature found on more expensive cars. I really liked this feature over the few days I used it. When buying a premium SUV, the first few seconds in the cabin should impress – the XUV700 does. The interior is easily their best yet and is understated as well. By that I mean simple but upscale with lightweight materials, gloss black finishes and faux leather. Mercedes-type switches on the door pads are also handy.
I liked that not everything is put on the touchscreen and there is a controller underneath with physical buttons. It was useful and there had to be a balance. Other stuff? I liked the digital cluster and Mahindra gives you a ton of options to configure the display or even access a lot of features including ADAS. Our car was fully loaded with the optional pack so it came with the 360 ââdegree camera which had multiple angles as well as a superbly detailed view and a blind view monitor that engages when you turn on the indicator on either side. .
On a hot day the dual-zone air conditioning cooled the cabin quickly and yes the massive panoramic sunroof adds to the premium quality – although not a huge fan of sunroofs, I haven’t used it – but the owners will like it. The air purifier has proven to be useful due to Delhi’s air quality, as has the power driver’s seat. The XUV700 is spacious and I found time to be with a driver when my colleague wanted to drive the car a bit. There is plenty of legroom for someone as tall as me and the width is also pretty good with relatively flat ground. The seats are a bit firm but offer enough comfort and the rear passengers can easily slide forward in the front seat from the back for more space. The third row is not the best place and is best used as a space for luggage or for children with less space.
Let’s talk about security because there are a lot of them. There are 7 airbags, an ADAS system that can be controlled via the buttons on the steering wheel, customizable voice speed alerts, automatic headlights and automatic high beam assist in deactivation mode at over 80 km / h. These automatic booster lights came in handy and I tested some of the features of ADAS. Emergency braking assistance is very useful in addition to alerting the driver in the event of fatigue. There is a lane keeping aid which also worked well. However, adaptive cruise control doesn’t really make sense on our roads, but some of it really does help.
For our test we had the gasoline XUV700 and the reason is we wanted to spend more time and see how a gasoline XUV700 holds weight and if it can deliver diesel-like torque. The final point is where Mahindra has gone for more power and to make sure they get that look okay and made us happy with a proper 2.0l turbo gasoline with no less than 200PS and 380Nm. This makes the XUV700 fast and smooth. The engine is a big highlight and I put a smile on my face regarding how it pulls at low revs or even how it likes to be driven hard. Acceleration is quick and this massive SUV cruises from 0 to 100 km / h in under 10 seconds while easily reaching triple-digit speeds on the private road we tested it on. The engine is refined, smooth, and feels like you have a lot of power under your right foot. There is torque too and it almost feels like a diesel at low speed or even power effortlessly with luggage and other passengers.
In the city, gasoline was more agile than diesel. The steering, for example, is very light for a large SUV and allows you to park it easily and drive it through traffic as if it were a much smaller SUV. It is quite easy to get used to the XUV700. The automatic in our test car had the 6-speed torque converter, while I didn’t miss any paddle shifters, drive modes like diesel would have been good. That said, it does have so much power that you don’t mind overall. The XUV700 is also a dynamic shift with better handling and improved stability at high speeds. Frequency-selective dampers give a dynamic polish and feel like a fun SUV to drive. You don’t feel the weight of the car. If anything, I would have liked a little heavier steering at higher speeds and a more absorbent ride at lower speeds, but this is one of the more fun SUVs to drive.
Mileage? My heavy right foot means that the efficiency is there. I drove and enjoyed the performance plus the start / stop traffic meant I drove 6-8 kmpl in the city. Relaxed highway driving the next day showed 9 kmpl. Smooth cruising at high speed will give 10 kmpl, but the XUV700 gasoline is indeed thirsty – which you should expect since it has 200ps after all!
Does the XUV700 live up to the hype? Yes, in most ways. As a product, it gives you three-row seats, a great gasoline engine and also a very tech-oriented interior. However, at Rs 21 lakh plus for a fully charged gasoline seen here, you are paying for it along with some essential features that should have been part of the standard equipment list. But after a few days of use, the dynamically XUV700 is a proven product and we liked the engine, performance, interior and overall packaging. Yes, prices have increased since launch, but lower versions with the same engine still offer great value for money and even this top-of-the-line version has more power and features than competing SUVs. We recommend diesel for efficiency and road trip enthusiasts due to its longer range, but as a gasoline SUV the XUV700 overall impressed us and for reasons we weren’t expecting it – that’s really fun to drive! So if your daily run is less and requires gasoline, the XUV700 is a good, safe way to embrace the concept of a gasoline SUV!
