Background

  • USAID Advancing Nutrition is the Agency’s flagship multi-sector nutrition project, led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), and a diverse group of experienced partners. Launched in September 2018, USAID Advancing Nutrition implements nutrition interventions across sectors and disciplines for USAID and its partners.

In Nigeria, the project aims to achieve the following objectives.

the project’s objectives

  • Objective 1: Strengthen multi-sectoral linkages and coordination through technical assistance to the Nigerian Government, Mission and implementing partners
  • Objective 2: Support the Government of Nigeria to strengthen services for the prevention and treatment of wasting
  • Objective 3: Generate evidence and test innovative approaches to improve nutrition programs and inform future designs
  • In an effort to achieve its second objective, the project organized a one-day stakeholder consultative forum on managing wasting in Nigeria. The forum involved key stakeholders representing government, academia, development partners, bilateral partners and the organized private sector. The findings of the workshop are intended to serve as a guide for the Government of Nigeria and other development partners to develop and implement strategic programs that will address the challenges of wasting among Nigerian children. Therefore, the action point following the consultation meeting is the dissemination of the report to stakeholders for further action.

Goals

  • Share and animate the report of the wasting consultation meeting with very high level actors
  • Develop an action plan on strategies for improving the management of wasting in Nigeria.

Activities
The consultant will work closely with the USAID Advancing Nutrition team based in Abuja to perform the following tasks:

  • Design meeting agenda: Work with the USAID Advancing Nutrition team and certain key stakeholders identified in the planning and design for the execution of the stakeholder meeting.
  • Review and summarize consultation report: Work with the team to review the existing consultation report and other reports, and develop a summary and PowerPoint presentation for the meeting.
  • Facilitate the meeting: In close collaboration with the team, lead the meeting, ensure that the discussions are focused on the objectives of the meeting and ensure effective note taking for the minutes.
  • Report: Write a draft activity report and review drafts with comments and submit a final copy.

Provisional schedule:

  • The expected duration to complete this task is 15 days, between September 5, 2022 and September 30, 2022.

Ethical and legal issues:
Ownership of the project and of the final documentation belongs exclusively to the agency and the funder. The document, or related posting, will not be shared with anyone unless approved by USAID Advancing Nutrition. USAID Advancing Nutrition will be the primary recipient of the report. USAID Advancing Nutrition may share the Activity Report with the following groups:

  • Donors
  • Various coordinating bodies
  • Government stakeholders
  • For independent consultants, the consultant must have no connection with the contracting authority or any other conflict of interest that would interfere with the independence of the activity.

Intellectual property rights:

  • All assignment-related documentation (whether within the scope of the duties) will remain the sole and exclusive property of USAID Advancing Nutrition.

Qualifications
The consultant will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Masters Degree in Nutrition, Public Health or similar related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in nutrition/public health programming
  • In-depth knowledge of the management (prevention and treatment) of acute malnutrition, particularly wasting.
  • Extensive experience in organizing and conducting nutrition (or similar) workshops, high-level meetings with stakeholders
  • Experience in writing qualitative reports of meetings and workshops.
  • Fluency in English (written and oral communication ability).
  • Strong personal discipline and ability to meet deadlines, even under pressure.
  • The ability to work closely in a team, to be patient, adaptable and flexible.
  • Relevant experience in a similar job will be a plus
