Interior Designer II – Portland, OR, US | Works

JHID is housed in a beautiful 1860s building in downtown Portland, Oregon and has just expanded to open an office in Paris. We currently have projects in New York, Colorado, New Hampshire, Arizona, Los Angeles, Oakland, Maui, Seattle and throughout Oregon. The primary role of a Designer II is to develop management skills and competencies while supporting senior designers on various projects. This is a robust role requiring a variety of responsibilities and tasks. Designers II retain a support role on select projects while managing one or two projects under the supervision of senior managers. The goal is to understand the complexities of a project and learn to think about all the components – plan and be proactive – while continuing to hone professional and design skills. Additionally, Designers II will begin to manage support staff, learning to delegate, train, and provide constructive feedback.

Job duties include:

  • Collaborate with senior level designers to support projects in all phases.

  • Collaborate with and delegate to junior design staff specific to each project.

  • Project management with oversite. Serve as primary point of contact for clients, external project partners and internal team.

  • Lead the design process with oversite, working with Jessica and her team. Track concepts to completion in all design phases.

  • Identify and meet the needs of customers and external partners of the project.

  • Refine skill and precision in the detailing and specification process.

  • Develop an awareness of project scope, budgets and timelines.

  • Create and manage drawing sets with supervision, working documents and presentation materials.

  • Apply JHID standards in all deliverables and work methods.

  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with clients and external project partners on the JHID design and process.

  • Receive and provide constructive feedback within project teams.

  • Contribute to the overall culture and success of JHID.

Desired skills & experience:

  • 3+ years working in the interior design role and a degree in interior design/architecture.

  • Ability to build trusting relationships with customers, teammates and external partners.

  • Desire to work in a team atmosphere, support your peers, and contribute to the culture, standards, and processes that make JHID successful.

  • A flexible and positive attitude and the ability to deal with change calmly and effectively.

  • A talent for prioritizing, juggling multiple projects and delegating when necessary.

  • Refined visual presentation skills as well as excellent written and verbal communications.

  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite, Vectorworks or AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, SketchUp. Strong freehand and computer skills. JHID uses a MAC platform.

  • Project experience which includes submission of drawing sets including but not limited to specifications, technical production and basic knowledge of code.

  • Experience in construction administration and/or project management is an asset.

  • Skills in visual research, material sourcing and specification, custom furniture design and furniture sourcing.

  • Design aesthetically compatible with JHID.

This position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week with occasional overtime required to meet project deadlines. Preference will be given to local designers or designers willing to relocate to Portland, a possible remote employee may be considered.
